Executive Council Responds to Revocation of Salaita Appointment

In response to the revocation of Professor Steven Salaita’s appointment to a tenured position at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, MLA President Margaret W. Ferguson and MLA First Vice President Roland Greene sent a letter on behalf of the Executive Council urging Phyllis M. Wise, chancellor of the university, to reconsider. The letter asserted that rescinding Salaita’s offer after he expressed controversial views on social media was a threat to the principles of academic freedom. The “right to express unpopular views on important issues,” wrote Ferguson and Greene, “is critical to the health of our democratic society and to its institutions of higher education.”  The full letter  is available on the MLA Web site.
